Manolo Has Pizzazz
Let’s catch up on the latest news in MLW and preview tonight’s episode of Fusion.
Grab your sunscreen, beach towel, sandals, and hazmat suit, because MLW Fusion is going to Filthy Island. Tom Lawlor used the prestige of winning the 2020 Opera Cup to springboard into hosting a special outdoor festival. Expect Filthy Island to be one of a kind.
Financial affairs for Filthy Island remain to be a mystery after major brands pulled their participation over alleged misbehavior from Team Filthy. When fighters showed up in Hawaii, their hotel bookings had been canceled. Thankfully, the Von Erichs invited those who were stranded to bunk on their ranch.
Team Filthy has announced that Fanene SPAM is sponsoring the fights. Matches will be contested with no ropes. Fight purses are winner takes all at $10,000 a pop. The press release specifies payment by check, so don’t be surprised if those bounce. At least the fight of the night will be rewarded with a lifetime supply of spam.
The feature bout for the evening is the long-awaited rematch between King Mo and Low Ki to become the 2021 King of the Knockout. The Lone Wolf of Brooklyn lost the first encounter under dubious circumstances when Lawlor interfered. With the Von Erichs banned from the event, Low Ki will need to strategize appropriately to counteract outside intruders again.
Mil Muertes will be in action, except his match won’t take place at Filthy Island. It will be deep in the jungles of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. The mysterious owner of Azteca Underground is using the Man of 1,000 Deaths to teach a lesson to Savio Vega after turning down an offer to purchase the IWA promotion in Puerto Rico. The commentary duo of Rich Bocchini and Jared Saint Laurent has flown in to Merida to call the action in a simulcast during Filthy Island.
Also advertised for Filthy Island are Kevin Ku versus Zenshi, NJPW representative Rocky Romero versus Gringo Loco, a prizefight challenge from Dominic Garrini, Alicia Atout interviewing TJP after he booted Bu Ku Dao from his dojo, and an appearance from Dynasty members Richard Holliday and Alexander Hammerstone. Garrini had been previously announced to compete against Polynesian champ Mauna Loa, so we’ll have to see if that match was changed or will be one in the same.
The official preview is worth reading with references of, “5 feet tall and 6 feet wide,” for Gringo Loco and, “unorthodox yoga lucha garbage” for Zenshi. Team Filthy added this disclaimer in regard to the purse, “Currency in prize fight to be defined at a later date. For the purpose of full disclosure, MLW has insisted we divulge it is NOT in American dollars. Whatever. 10,000 of something is better than 10,000 of nothing, right?”
MLW Fusion posts on YouTube Wednesday nights at 7 pm ET, streams on Fubo Sports Network Friday nights at 7 pm ET and 10 pm ET, and airs on beIN SPORTS Saturday nights at 10 pm ET. You can also check out MLW on demand with DAZN. In addition, MLW is broadcast in over 20 countries.
When Team Filthy attacked ACH last week, the result was extensive damage. ACH is suffering from fractured ribs and a collapsed lung. Dr. Nelson Sweglar is recommending at least a 28-day stint on the injured list.
In an update with the brouhaha between Salina de la Renta and Alicia Atout, Salina is requesting costume ideas to force Atout to wear during their next interview together. That would most likely take place on Atout’s outside interview program. Salina is also giving Alicia the opportunity to win her way out of contractual clauses.
Richard Holliday shared a tender photo for Valentine’s Day. Feel the love.
That image came from Holliday’s strap match victory over Savio Vega. I wouldn’t be surprised if Holliday petitions for it to become the official Caribbean flag.
