On This Day: Wrestlemania 4

Atlantic City, NJ (Atlantic City Convention Hall/Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino) on March 27, 1988

The fourth edition of Wrestlemania held a 14-wrestler tournament to crown the new WWF Heavyweight Champion. Why would they need a tournament?

Well, a month before at The Main Event, Andre the Giant defeated Hulk Hogan (champion) with the aide from the evil referee, Dave Hebner. Prior to Andre winning the title, Ted DiBiase approached Hulk Hogan about purchasing his championship title. Hogan refused DiBiase’s offer.

Andre the Giant “defeats” Hulk Hogan with the help of the evil referee. Immediately, Andre the Giant sells the Heavyweight Championship to the “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase.

After Andre’s win at The Main Event, Ted DiBiase immediately purchased the championship. President Jack Tunney said the heavyweight championship cannot be bought. Therefore at Wrestlemania 4, there would be a championship tournament to decide who will be the rightful champion.
