The AEW tag team titles were on the line tonight (Feb. 17) on Dynamite when the Young Bucks defended the gold against Ortiz and Santana of the Inner Circle. The winning team enters AEW Revolution on Mar. 7 as the champs, in a match against Chris Jericho and MJF.
We’ve seen the Bucks, Santana, and Ortiz do battle before, and it’s always an exciting match. There was some speculation that the Bucks might drop the titles here to set up an Inner Circle vs. Inner Circle match on the pay-per-view, but it wasn’t meant to be. The Bucks pulled out the win with an inside cradle.
After the match, the rest of the Inner Circle rushed down to the ring and beat the hell out of the Young Bucks. Considering how many members are in the Inner Circle, even with Sammy Guevara quitting last week, this attack quickly got out of hand. If only the Young Bucks had some friends watching their backs.
Ah, but they do have some friends – Kenny Omega and the Good Brothers. They were all watching the beatdown on a monitor backstage, along with Don Callis. The Bucks’ friends weren’t in a rush to save them, aside from Brandon Cutler. The Good Brothers eventually did head out to the ring, at Omega’s request. But it was too little, too late.
There was one more wrinkle before the segment ended – the Young Bucks’ father shoved Jericho at ringside after being taunted by him.
That will likely play into another segment between the Bucks and the Inner Circle, perhaps even at Revolution.
